Research team

The research is conducted by the team of prof. Michał Polasik, from the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, in cooperation with prof. Leo Van Hove from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and dr Krzysztof Korus from dLK Legal.

Michał Polasik 

Principal investigator of the pan-European ‘PayTechImpact.EU’ research project. Associate Professor at the Faculty of Economic Sciences and Management of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Poland and Head of the Centre for Digital Economy and Finance NCU. Author of over seventy academic publications on retail payments and digital finance. He has led several research projects regarding payment innovations, payment systems, e-commerce, and cryptocurrencies. He is the co-founder and CEO of the NCU spin-off company Technology For Mobile Ltd., which aims to increase the knowledge of commercialisation and to cooperate with the FinTech sector.

Leo Van Hove

Professor of Economics at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Free University of Brussels), where he teaches courses in monetary economics and the economics of information. His current research interests include payment instruments, network effects, e-publishing and access to finance. He has published extensively on these and other subjects in international journals such as Journal of Money, Credit, Banking, International Journal of Electronic Commerce etc. He is invited regularly as a guest speaker by central banks and payment providers.

Krzysztof Korus

Dr Krzysztof Korus is an attorney with a doctorate in law, and an economist. He is an expert on payment services, new technologies law, and banking law. Every year since 2015, he has been listed as a recommended lawyer in Chambers Europe in the Banking & Finance category (“strong experience in banking regulatory matters”, “deep knowledge and long experience”). He is a pioneer in advising on regulatory issues for the fintech sector in Poland.

Dominik Sadłakowski

Dominik Sadłakowski is responsible for conducting research in the area of payment innovations, new technologies in banking, and the implementation of PSD2 regulations. He gained experience in the Payment Systems Department of the Polish Central Bank as an oversight and research specialist. Then he worked as a project manager in the field of electronic and mobile banking for one of the most innovative commercial banks in Poland. He is a PHD candidate and experienced researcher, who published more than twenty scientific publications, and was an editor of several monographs in the field of finance.

Natalia Tetkowska

Natalia Tetkowska supports the team in the area of research methodologies and BigTechs innovations. She has more than five years of experience in market research regarding financial, IT and the energetic areas gained representing both sides – agency and client (Kantar TNS, Mastercard, Polasik Research). For the last four years, she has been working in Supply Chain Planning (Procter&Gamble, Coty), where she develops her project management skills. Her main interests are mobile payments, BigTech payments innovations and project management excellence.

Agnieszka Huterska

Agnieszka Huterska is an assistant professor at the Department of Digital Economy and Finance, the Faculty of Economics and Management at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń. She has over fifty publications in the field of economic sciences among her scientific achievements. Her research interests focus on financial inclusion, ITC inclusion, corporate finance, and the financial markets. Since 2018 she has led the research project ‘Local conditions for the acceptance and use of cashless payments in Poland’.

Marta Jakubowska

A PhD candidate at the Faculty of Economics and Management at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, graduate of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at the NCU. Participant of several team research grants and research and development projects on topics related to payment systems, founded by the National Science Centre and the Warsaw Institute of Banking. Her main research interests include cashless payments and the shadow economy, in particular, consumer payment choice and payment systems network externalities.

Mikołaj Borowski-Beszta

PhD Candidate of the Interdisciplinary Doctoral School of Social Sciences at the Nicolaus Copernicus University. Participant of several team research grants and research & development projects concerning the digital economy and finance, founded by the National Science Centre and the Warsaw Institute of Banking. His main research interests include mobile banking & payments, digital services platforms as well as the role of wearables and alternative data exchange interfaces in retail payments.

Andrzej Meler

Research assistant at the Institute of Sociology of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Poland, cooperative of the Faculty of Economic Sciences and Management NCU. The Polish Sociological Association awarded him for his master’s thesis. He participated in over a hundred research projects as the project manager, researcher, analyst, and data miner. He has worked as a specialist in research and analysis for Polska Press Group for ten years. Currently, his research focuses on two areas: the digital payments methods and media, primarily in quantitative methods and statistical analysis.

Anna Iwona Piotrowska

Anna Iwona Piotrowska, PhD – is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Economic Sciences and Management of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń. Her research focuses on digital currencies and new technologies in the payment market. She is the author or co-author of twenty scientific papers in the field of finance. She wrote the book ‘Bitcoin – payment and investment applications of cryptocurrency’, which received the e-DUKAT award granted by the Foundation for Development of Cashless Payments at the VII Cashless Congress 2018.
